Foster to join House committee overseeing coronavirus relief

U.S. Rep. Bill Foster of Naperville has been named to the House Select Committee on the Coronavirus Crisis.

On Wednesday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, of California, and Majority Whip James Clyburn, of South Carolina, announced the Democratic members of the committee to oversee federal implementation of coronavirus relief measures.

The 12-member committee, led by Clyburn, will include seven Democratic and five Republican lawmakers. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy will announce the Republican members.

"In the midst of an unprecedented public health and economic crisis, it's critical to ensure taxpayer dollars being spent to confront the pandemic and provide economic relief for families and small businesses are being spent effectively and as intended," Foster said in an emailed statement. "We must do all we can to prevent waste, fraud, and abuse, and to protect against price-gouging and profiteering."

Foster also serves as Chairman of the Financial Services Committee's Artificial Intelligence Task Force, and Chairman of the House Science Committee's Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee.

He represents Illinois' 11th Congressional District, which includes Aurora, Naperville and Joliet. He is a former high-energy particle physicist at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia and a businessman.
