Legendary Vermont sports anchor Tony Adams dies at 95

BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Legendary Vermont sports anchor Tony Adams died at the age of 95.

Adams, an anchor for 35 years at WCAX in Burlington, died Tuesday evening, the station reported.

The former sportscaster began his career at WMUR-TV in New Hampshire before joining WCAX when the station made the switch to TV in 1954.

The transition for Adams from radio to the small screen was a traumatic one.

"I had many sleepless nights leading up to it," he told the station at the time.

But once he made the jump, Adams became synonymous with Vermont sports, coining the memorable sign-off line, 'Å“Goodnight, good sports."

He served as the voice of the University of Vermont football, basketball and baseball teams for two decades. He also was the lead announcer for Dartmouth football for 10 years.

Adams retired from the sports desk in 1989 but continued to host WCAX's 'Across the Fence" daytime show.

The station reported that he spent his last few months in hospice. His family does not believe his death is related to coronavirus.
