Indiana man dies after police subdue him with stun gun

GRANGER, Ind. (AP) - A northern Indiana man died in police custody shortly after an officer used a stun gun to subdue him when he refused to drop a knife during a domestic incident, police said.

A St. Joseph County sheriff's deputy used his stun gun on the knife-wielding man Wednesday when he stood up after initially complying with a police request to get on the ground, and then lunged at that deputy and a second officer.

Sheriff William Redman said the man, who was in his late 50s, was then handcuffed but suffered a medical issue.

Redman said police removed the handcuffs and began CPR and medics then arrived and continued life-saving efforts, but the man was pronounced dead on the front yard of his home.

Police were called to the scene in Granger, just east of South Bend, on a report that a man was chasing his wife with a knife. When officers arrived, the man was in the home's garage still holding the knife, Redman said.

The officer who used the stun gun on the man has been placed on administrative leave. Redman said the St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit will investigated the incident.
