Montini officials staying mum on Martinez's future

Montini Catholic High School officials are not talking about the future of wrestling coach Israel Martinez after Martinez did not coach at the Class 3A dual team wrestling finals last weekend in Bloomington.

"As a matter of policy Montini Catholic High School does not respond to inquiries concerning personnel matters such as your inquiry," Montini President Jim Segredo wrote in an email to the Daily Herald last week.

Attempts to reach principal Kevin Beirne and athletic director Tom Lentine for comment were unsuccessful. Montini board chairman Walter Weisenburger and print media coordinator Barbara Dawson declined to comment.

Martinez also did not return a call. He has been the coach at Montini since the 2010-11 season.

The Broncos won the state championship without their coach Saturday night with a 37-9 victory against Mt. Carmel. It was the third consecutive dual team championship for Montini, which also won in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015.

Five Broncos won individual state championships Feb. 22 in Champaign with Martinez there to coach them.
