Endorsement: White in Democratic primary for DuPage County auditor

Both candidates seeking the Democratic nomination for DuPage County auditor could serve well in the position.

Both Bruce C. Fogerty, of Wheaton, and William "Bill" White, of Downers Grove, are well-versed in the duties of the office. Both have thoughtful and creative ideas about how it should be operated. And both demonstrate the kind of sincere sense of purpose that would help them both effectively monitor the work and spending of county officials and work successfully with them to correct errors, assure accountability for any wrongdoing and improve processes where necessary.

While both men have relevant accounting backgrounds for the post, their government and civic experiences differ, and it's here that we find the distinction that's most persuasive.

White has served on both the Community High School District 99 school board and the Downers Grove Village Council, and he has an extensive resume of civic and community work that give him a comprehensive view of local government that we find compelling. That's not to say that Fogerty's background, which includes diverse experiences in civic and political projects but no elected office, is irrelevant. It, too, is impressive.

But we think White's deeper level of involvement in diverse government roles gives him an edge that would help him quickly and effectively operate the office should he be elected in November.

White is endorsed.
