DuPage voters will decide some primaries, but many candidates have a free pass to November
There will be several contested spring primary races in DuPage County, but most candidates will have a clear path to next November's general election.
The last day of filing for the March 17 primary ended Monday with a few candidates submitting nominating petitions for spots on the spring ballot.
Here's a look at where primary races are taking shape:
County board
Democrats have filed nominating petitions to challenge Republicans for all six available county board seats next fall. There will even be a Democratic primary in two of the six districts.
In DuPage's most crowded primary race, five candidates are seeking the Democratic nomination for one District 4 seat. The candidates are Hadiya Afzal of Glen Ellyn, Janette DeFelice of Glen Ellyn, John Jacobs of Wheaton, Lynn LaPlante of Glen Ellyn and Hailey Nicewanner of Glen Ellyn.
The top vote-getter will advance to face incumbent Republican Tim Elliott of Glen Ellyn in the general election. District 4 includes all or parts of Addison, Bloomingdale, Carol Stream, Glen Ellyn, Glendale Heights, Lisle, Lombard, Wheaton and Winfield.
In District 5, two Democratic candidates have emerged in the race to fill the seat long held by Republican Jim Healy.
Healy isn't seeking reelection in the district that covers all or parts of Aurora, Lisle, Naperville, Warrenville and Woodridge.
Amy Chavez of Naperville and Mary Jo Mullen of Lisle are vying for the Democratic nomination. The winner is expected to face Republican newcomer Kevin Coyne, a Naperville City Council member, in November.
Countywide
There will be Republican and Democratic primaries for three countywide posts - auditor, clerk of the circuit court and recorder of deeds.
In the race for auditor, Republican Jeffrey Mack of Downers Grove is challenging incumbent Bob Grogan. Meanwhile, Bruce Fogerty of Wheaton and Bill White of Downers Grove will face off in the Democratic primary.
A pair of Democrats - Moon Khan of Lombard and Candice Adams of Lisle - are running for circuit court clerk. The winner will face GOP incumbent Chris Kachiroubas.
Babette Holder Youngberg of Wheaton and Ron Almiron of Wheaton are seeking to become the GOP nominee for the recorder seat held by Republican Fred Bucholz, who is retiring. Democrat Kathleen Carrier of Carol Stream is running unopposed in March for her party's nomination.
Forest preserve
There will be two contested primary races for seats on the DuPage Forest Preserve Commission.
In District 5, incumbent Mary Lou Wehrli of Naperville will be challenged by former commissioner Carl Schultz of Aurora in the GOP primary. The winner is expected to face Democrat Barbara O'Meara of Naperville in the general election.
In District 2, Tina Tyson-Dunne of Lombard and Natalie Shannon-DiCianni of Elmhurst will square off in the Democratic primary. The winner is expected to face Karen Kelly, a Republican from Downers Grove. The seat currently is held by Republican Jeff Redick, who isn't running.
District 2 includes all or portions of Addison, Clarendon Hills, Downers Grove, Elmhurst, Hinsdale, Lisle, Lombard, Naperville, Oak Brook, Oakbrook Terrace, Villa Park, Westmont and Woodridge.
