Police: Drunken driver hits stopped Round Lake Park cop car, other vehicle

A motorist was drunk when he sideswiped a Round Lake Park police car and another vehicle that were stopped on the side of a road in that town, authorities said Thursday.

No one was hurt in the crash, which occurred about 7:40 p.m. Wednesday on Hainesville Road just north of Oak Avenue.

Alejandro Gonzalez-Maldonado, 49, of the 300 block of Pineview Drive in Hainesville, is charged with two counts of driving under the influence of alcohol, child endangerment, violating Scott's Law, failing to reduce speed to avoid a crash, improper lane usage and having an expired registration, Lake County sheriff's police said in a news release.

Gonzalez-Maldonado had a child in his 2002 Ford SUV, police said.

Gonzalez-Maldonado was headed south when he hit the driver's side of the squad car and a Dodge pickup truck the officer had stopped because of an equipment violation, sheriff's police said.

The police car's emergency lights were illuminated.

The officer was standing on the passenger's side of the car and talking to the driver through a window when the crash occurred, and likely avoided injury as a result, police said.

Gonzalez-Maldonado stopped on his own after the crash, police said.

He was arrested but later was released from Lake County jail on a recognizance bond. He is scheduled to appear in court Dec. 18.
