Round Lake Beach mom who took son's body on train analyzed for fitness to stand trial

Jamie Jones, the Round Lake Beach woman charged with beating her son to death and then taking his body onto a Metra train, has been analyzed by a court doctor concerning her fitness to stand trial.

Jones, 31, has pleaded not guilty to 12 counts of first-degree murder in connection with the beating death of her 6-year-old son, Carl Rice. She also was charged with aggravated battery against a child and with concealing a homicide death.

Jones appeared before a Lake County Judge Tuesday. Her lawyer Doug Zeit said he'd received the doctor's report, which was not made public, and asked the judge for time to analyze the information.

Jones will be back before the judge on Dec. 3.

Authorities say Jones' son Carl died in his sleep overnight between June 30 and July 1, 2017, after a severe beating. Officials said the child was bruised from his face and head to his torso. He also suffered a brain hemorrhage.

Surveillance video shows Jones took the boy in a cab to the Round Lake Beach Metra station accompanied by her 9-year-old daughter. The child was placed inside the station in a corner seat and was propped up with the help of a backpack. Jones carried him onto a train bound for Chicago, then carried him through Union Station before getting into a car outside, video shows.

Jones faces life in prison if convicted. She has been held in the Lake County jail for more than two years.
