District 211 board could name next superintendent Thursday

The Palatine-Schaumburg High School District 211 board of education could appoint its next superintendent at a special meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, at the district's administration building in Palatine.

The meeting agenda includes a forum for citizens to speak, followed by a closed session of the board. Board members would return to open session for a potential appointment vote.

The next superintendent would officially start July 1, 2020, the day after current Superintendent Dan Cates' retirement. But since this summer, the board and the search firm it hired have aimed to provide the appointee the same eight months to work on a transition that Cates had when he was selected in October 2013.

In July, the board hired Minnesota-based School Exec Connect Inc. for $17,900 to compile a narrow a list of candidates for the superintendent search.

Since then, an online survey, focus groups and public meetings have been conducted to solicit public input on the search in addition to board members' deliberations.

Search firm representatives said their plan was to choose the six best candidates from the nationwide search to present to the board, then narrow the list to two or three whom focus groups would meet.

Though these focus groups would have an opportunity to share their thoughts on the candidates, the board has final say on a new superintendent.

The district's administration building is at 1750 S. Roselle Road in Palatine.
