Garden at Mundelein Seminary to honor Cardinal Francis George

A garden at the Mundelein Seminary will be dedicated to the late Cardinal Francis George in an Oct. 27 ceremony.

Cardinal Blase Cupich will lead a public Mass at 9:30 a.m. and then bless the site, which is on the campus of the University of St. Mary of the Lake, 1000 E. Maple Ave.

George served as archbishop of the Archdiocese of Chicago and as the seminary's chancellor from 1997 to 2014. He was named cardinal in 1998.

George resigned in September 2014 and was succeeded by Cupich. George died of cancer in 2015.

The garden honoring George is the middle of the seminary's campus. It includes a walking path leading to a grotto, an outdoor Stations of the Cross, a statue of Pope Pius X, and a statue of St. Joseph with Jesus.

"Given his influence on an entire generation of Mundelein seminarians from across the country, it is fitting that we honor his legacy with a permanent tribute on our campus," said the Rev. John Kartje, the seminary's rector, in an announcement of the dedication.

The Mass and dedication will be followed by a light brunch in the seminary dining hall and campus tours.

Free tickets can be reserved at usml.edu/rectorsmass.
