Purdue temporarily waiving fee on voter-ready student IDs

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - Purdue University is offering students who need updated identification cards that comply with Indiana law before the Nov. 5 election a chance to get them for free.

The Journal & Courier reports the university had been under pressure recently from Purdue faculty and other student voting advocates to waive a $10 fee for the cards.

The school says a "fee vacation" will take place Oct. 21-25. Purdue spokesman Tim Doty says similar grace periods could be offered ahead of future elections.

The school earlier announced new student IDs would be available with an expiration date six years from the day a card is issued. That information wasn't on Purdue's previous student IDs, but the newspaper has said it's required under Indiana's voter ID law that took effect in 2008.
