Police release two persons of interest in Arlington Heights shooting

Arlington Heights police have released two persons of interest and so far not filed any charges after an exchange of gunfire Saturday afternoon at a local park, authorities said Monday.

Police were called to Creekside Park, 4100 N. Schaefer Road, at 2:04 p.m. Saturday after witnesses reported that a man was chasing two other men through the retention basin of the park when they began shooting at each other, authorities said.

Some six to eight shots were fired in total, with none striking anyone, police said.

The two men questioned by investigators were initially apprehended after they tried to exit a perimeter established by Arlington Heights and Buffalo Grove police.

But after questioning the two individuals this weekend, police weren't able to establish a motive for the shooting or charge anyone. The persons of interest were also not forthcoming about what they were doing in the park Saturday afternoon, according to Cmdr. Joseph Pinnello.

A preliminary investigation suggested that the three individuals involved in the shooting knew each other, but that may not be the case, Pinnello said Monday.

The investigation remains open and ongoing, he said.
