Parents in hot water after kids miss a lot of school

FRANKLIN, Ind. (AP) - Some parents in Johnson County have been summoned to court because their children have missed too much school.

Chief Deputy Prosecutor Joe Villanueva says authorities don't want to put anyone in jail. He tells WXIN-TV that authorities "just want to try and correct the behavior."

The TV station says 11 parents have been charged, and three of them have entered a pretrial diversion program. Most children had more than 20 unexcused absences; one had 112.

Villanueva says his office will get involved if a student has 18 or more unexcused absences in a school year. Adam Baker of the state Department of Education said it's unusual to hear about students missing more than 20 days of school.

Baker says, "Attendance equals academic success."
