Saturday, June 1: Greater Chicago All American Soap Box Derby race, Frontenac Road at Diehl Road, Naperville. Boys and girls, ages 7-20, will compete in gravity-powered soap box derby cars. Saturday, July 13: Wings of Mercy Family Fun Day Car Show, Grayslake, 10 a.m. No admission fee for car show owners (for show only). Hosted at Campbell Airport, 22733 W. Townline Road. Benefits a nonprofit organization that provides free air transportation to distant medical centers for those in need. Sunday, July 14: The 8th annual Classic Car Show at Elgin History Museum, 360 Park St. Classic cars are featured on the front lawn and spill out onto Park Street. 10 a.m. -3 p.m. with trophies handed out at 3:30 p.m. The event and admission to the museum are free but donations are encouraged. All proceeds benefit the museum. Enjoy classic rock provided by a live band. Food and drinks are available for purchase. Sunday, Aug. 25: The Geneva Concours d'Elegance in the downtown Geneva business district of historic Third Street, from State to South streets, and all environs 2nd to 5th streets. Features are STuTZ, fin-tailed cars, 100 years of the Bentley Auto Co., Allards and the 75th anniversary of the SCCA. Included in this display will be many other classics, exotics and race cars. Participants will be considered for the "Carl F. Benz" awards. Car club members, reserve your parking place soon. Saturday, Oct. 5: The Elburn Lions Club will host its annual Car Cruise & Steak Dinner. Cruise participants should be at Elburn Lions Park, 500 Filmore St., by 2 p.m. to embark on a drive through the countryside for about 45 minutes. Participants will then visit a local engine rebuild shop, Auto Machine Inc., before returning to Elburn Lions Park where a rib-eye steak dinner with a salad bar and baked potato will be served. American Legion Post 36 in Des Plaines, one of the oldest in the state, has reorganized a Riders Group and is looking for additional members to join. Qualification are: membership in the American Legion, Sons of the American Legion, Legion Auxiliary, and have a licensed motorcycle of 300 cubic centimeters or larger.
