Memorial Day volunteers honor veterans of the Civil War, War of 1812 and Spanish-American War

Tuesday, May 21 was a rainy spring day, when volunteers from the Glen Ellyn Historical Society met at Forest Hill Cemetery on Riford and St. Charles roads to place Memorial Day observance flags on the graves of Glen Ellyn Civil War soldiers, veterans from the War of 1812, and the Spanish-American War.

The rain came down gently as the four volunteers followed the grave maps and honored them with American flags.

This project has been carried out by the Glen Ellyn Historical Society for nine years and rain was not going to stop them in 2019.

The four volunteers were Dan Anderson, Suzanne Carty, Wes Kidd and Bill Ristau.

Ristau is a descendant of the Churchill family which founded Glen Ellyn. Carty is president of the Glen Ellyn Historical Society. Anderson and Kidd are longtime residents. All have taken part in this Memorial Day Event over the years.

The flags will remain at the grave sites for one week.

This is a good time for Scouts, area students and families to experience the history of Glen Ellyn.
