Elgin recognizes sustainability:

Resident Robin Migalla, Elgin Community College's Biology 108 honors class and Green Guerrilla were honored May 16 at the inaugural Elgin sustainability awards ceremony. Previously, the city's sustainability commission recognized community members and groups with the sustainability honor roll award, which was delivered biannually during a regular commission meeting. "The commission had the difficult job of choosing one winner within each category, however it is important to note that particularly in the realm of sustainability, there are no wasted efforts," commission chairwoman Tia Aagesen said.

Huntley theater auditions:

It's Showtime Theatre of Huntley announces auditions Thursday, June 6, from 7 to 9 p.m., for the Broadway Revue "Magical Musicals and Pixie Dust" directed by Aaron Gomez with music direction by Charlie Sommers. Open to all ages and experience levels. Performers are asked to prepare a song from a Disney stage, television, or film musical that shows off their range and style. They are responsible for bringing their own MP3 accompaniment to the audition. There will be an MP3 player available, but no piano player. Auditions take place at the Huntley Park District, 12015 Mill St., Huntley. For information, contact Stephanie Peters at speters@huntleyparks.org. The Broadway Revue will rehearse one to two times a week. Not all performers will be required at all rehearsals. The revue will perform Aug. 23, 24, 25.

Hampshire High gets new band director:

Gregory Matushek recently was named Hampshire High School's new band director. Matushek spent the last three years working as a middle school band and choir teacher in Elgin Area School District U-46. Previously, he taught middle school band for three years at Westfield Community School in Algonquin. While at Westfield, Matushek directed musicals and worked with the Jacobs High School Marching Band. He also has spent time arranging music for bands at every level, from fifth grade through college marching band. Among his career highlights is arranging "The Star Spangled Banner" performed by Chicago Blackhawks National Anthem singer Jim Cornelison at Northern Illinois University. When not teaching, Matushek plays the piano and directs musicals throughout the western suburbs, working with high schools and community theaters.

New principal for Bernotas:

The Crystal Lake Elementary District 47 school board this week appointed Kellie Marks as principal of Bernotas Middle School starting in the 2019-20 school year. Marks has served as an assistant principal at Bernotas since 2016. She previously taught sixth grade for 14 years in McHenry District 15. She taught language arts and math, served as a student council advisor, and playing an active role on many school and district committees. A Cary-Grove High School graduate, Marks attended the Air Force Academy for two years. She earned a bachelor's degree in education from Illinois State University and a master's degree in educational leadership from Aurora University. She will take the helm at Bernotas on July 1.

CMAP offers leadership development:

High school students interested in urban planning can apply to participate in a free one-week FLIP Summer Leadership Development Program. Now in its 11th year, FLIP allows students an opportunity to make their voices heard to transform northeastern Illinois into a better place to live, go to school, work, and play. Participants in the 2019 program will meet with other students from Cook, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, Lake, McHenry, and Will counties and key regional leaders to share ideas and plan for a better future. The program will take place at CMAP's offices in Chicago and include hands-on educational field trips. Selected students must be available July 15 through 20. Application deadline is Monday.
