DuPage County jail inmate triggers lockdown
A DuPage County jail inmate already being held on $75,000 bail for threatening a Glenbard East High School student, picked up a new charge after he caused a lockdown Tuesday night, authorities said.
In addition to his standing charges of disorderly conduct and harassment through electronic communications, Jaris McCullum, 18, of the 1000 block of South Route 53 in Lombard, is now also charged with unlawful use or possession of weapons by felons or persons in the custody of the Department of Corrections.
Judge John Kinsella also increased McCullum's bail by $30,000 Wednesday morning.
Sheriff's officials say McCullum caused the lockdown when he was observed on camera disassembling the "water push button" from his sink and removed a 12-inch steel gauge rod that he then intended to use as a "shank" to settle a dispute he was having with another inmate.
Deputies were able to intervene before the pipe was used.
Just last month, Lombard police learned that a female student at the high school received a message via Facebook Messenger from McCullum in which he threatened to show up at school to kill her boyfriend and harm her.
The student alerted the dean of students and the school reported the threat to the Lombard police student resource officer.
McCullum is next due in court on May 13 when he is expected to be arraigned on all charges.
