Softball: Elk Grove rallies with 9-run sixth inning

Trailing 10-8 going into the bottom of the sixth inning, Elk Grove's softball team belted 3 home runs and scored 9 runs for a 17-10 win over visiting Rolling Meadows in the Mid-Suburban East Tuesday.

Olivia Masnica (3-for-4, 3 runs, 5 RBI), Morgan Leach (3-for-5, 3 RBI) and Jaimie Klicka (4-for-4, 5 RBI, 4 runs) all hit homers in the big rally while Masnica also had one in the first inning.

AJ Trausch went 3-for-4 with 3 runs and 3 doubles and Taylor Schulz had a pair of doubles for the Grens (16-2, 4-1).

Winning pitcher Lauren Clausen (10-1) had 4 strikeouts and gave up 6 hits while Masnica surrendered 5 hits and had 1 strikeout in the combined effort on the mound.

Senior Sam Allen, who belted a grand slam in the top of the fifth for Meadows, finished 2-for-4 with 6 RBI.

Other multiple hitters for the Mustangs (10-7, 3-4) were Stephanie Thompson (2-for-4) and Sam Benner (2-for-4, double) while Emily Schmidt added a double.

Barrington 7, Prospect 1: Senior Barbara Covek threw a 3-hitter with 11 strikeouts and no walks as host Barrington (14-3, 5-1) won the MSL West contest. Ellie Wintringer (2-for-3, RBI), Samantha Murphy (2-for-4, RBI), Kendall Peterson and Jackie Albrecht each doubled for the Fillies. Cassie Cunniff, Kathryn Keehn and Anna Linneman had the hits for Prospect (5-9, 2-4), which led 1-0 after 4 innings. Knights pitcher Claire Doherty struck out six.

Buffalo Grove 2, Hoffman Estates 1: Sophomore Kylie Mainville threw a 6-hitter with 4 strikeouts to notch the win for visiting Buffalo Grove (5-6, 2-3) in the MSL East. Bailey Williams went 2-for-3 for the Bison while teammates Angelina Craig, Megan Fontanetta, Sam Hansen and Peyton Morgan each had a hit. Brianna Venegas went 2-for-3 for Hoffman (1-14, 0-5). Gracie Velasquez, Emily Morris, Patricia Wadas and Emily Grossi each added a hit for the Hawks.

Highland Park 9, Maine West 7: Highland Park scored 5 runs in the top of the seventh for a 9-5 lead and held on to win the CSL North contest in Des Plaines. The Warriors were led by Amanda Byrne (3-for-4), Emily Divelbiss (2-for-4, 2 runs) and Brianna Torres (2-for-3, 2 runs). Maraya Adams added a double for West (7-9, 2-2). Jessica Steingard struck out nine and Abby Gawlinski had three.
