Carpentersville man charged in several cocaine deals

A Carpentersville man who was free on bond after a March arrest on cocaine charges has been arrested and charged with selling cocaine to Elgin police in late 2017 and in early 2018, according to police and court records.

Porfirio Roman-Ramirez, 36, of the 3400 block of Blue Ridge Drive, was arrested and charged with selling 15 to 30 grams of cocaine in Carpentersville on March 29, a felony that carries a punishment of six to 30 years in prison with no chance of probation.

After he posted bond, he was arrested this month on charges he sold $125 worth of cocaine to undercover detectives Nov. 29, and $250 worth on Dec. 20, 2017, along $1,000 for 16 grams of cocaine Jan. 2, 2018, in the parking lot of Applebee's, 125 S. Randall Road, Elgin, according to Kane County court records and an Elgin police report obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request.

Roman-Ramirez is free after posting 10 percent of $135,000 bail. Police did not specify why they waited until this month to arrest him on the new charges.

The three undercover deals are filed under one overall case against Roman-Ramirez. The most severe charge carries a prison term of six to 30 years without the chance of probation.

Defense attorney Scott Kent said he has yet to receive discovery documents from prosecutors in any of the cases. Once Kent receives the documents, he said, he will assess the situation with his client, "who is presumed innocent."

At the time of his most recent arrest, Roman-Ramirez had two pending cases out of Carpentersville: the March 2019 case of manufacture/delivery of a controlled substance and charges he sold 15 grams to 100 grams of cocaine in August 2018, according to Kane County court records.

The minimum prison term for the August Carpentersville case is nine years, meaning if he was convicted in all three cases, he could face 21 years in prison. Roman-Ramirez is next due in court May 30.
