Rewrite 'Reproductive Healthcare Act'
Other than abortion, under what situation does the law allow the killing of innocent human life and define it as necessary health care? In fact, under what other situation does the law provide for the killing of innocent human life in order to resolve any personal crisis?
The issue of abortion pits the rights of a pregnant woman against the rights of an unborn child. Science has brought us to the point where we can now see the humanity of the unborn child in a way that was not possible for our ancestors. Armed with this undeniable proof, we can no longer treat an unborn child as subhuman.
It is time to rewrite the laws of Illinois so that the health care needs of women are met. However, It should not be done by removing all rights and recognition of an unborn child as human.
It should not be done by removing all conscience protections for health care professional whose conscience will not allow them to kill innocent human life.
It should not be done by permitting the intentional death of an unborn human up to and including the day of it's birth.
Our laws should be written to recognize the unique dignity of every human life from conception until natural death. Then, and only then, will we have laws designed for the common good that will lead us to the point where abortion will be unthinkable.
Both Reps. Michelle Mussman, and Marty Moylan, as co-sponsors of HB 2495, should reject the bill as flawed and exercise virtuous and visionary leadership by recrafting a law that respects both the rights of the woman and the rights of the unborn child. Sen. Laura Murphy should do the same with the Senate version of the bill, SB 1942.
