Two in custody after report of man with gun in Vernon Hills

Two people are in custody after Vernon Hills police received a report of a man with a gun in a parking lot on Port Clinton Road, authorities said Friday.

College of Lake County's Southlake campus at 1120 S. Milwaukee Ave. in Vernon Hills was placed on a soft lockdown, while Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire was closed to the public for about 30 minutes because of the incident near the CLC campus Friday, authorities said.

Vernon Hills Police Chief Patrick Kreis said a citizen called police about 10:20 a.m. after seeing a man armed with a gun trying to get into vehicles in a parking lot in the 1100 block of Port Clinton Road.

Police responded to the area and took two men into custody after a search that ended about 11:15 a.m., Kreis said.

Several businesses near the parking lot also were placed on soft lockdown while police responded to the area, Kreis said. Other police departments were also called in to assist Vernon Hills Police, he said.

CLC officials tweeted throughout the police investigation until announcing the "dangerous situation has been resolved" and normal activities had resumed about 11:15 a.m.

Kreis said police will release additional details later. The incident remains under investigation and charges are pending, he said.
