Campton Hills woman died from baseball bat attack, investigation ongoing

Campton Hills police have turned over results of the investigation into the March 24 death of Mary Summerwill to the Kane County state's attorney's office.

The 53-year-old woman died after being struck "multiple" times with a baseball bat, according to the Kane County coroner.

Campton Hills Police Chief Steve Millar said officials presented representatives from the state's attorney's office on April 1 with evidence collected in the homicide investigation.

Prosecutors declined to comment on the case, other than to say this week that it is "still under investigation."

Millar also declined to comment on the case, but stressed there is no danger to the community.

"It's an isolated incident. Nobody is in any danger," he said. "It's up to the state's attorney as to what they're going to decide the charges are going to be."

Summerwill died the morning of March 24 after a family member called authorities to her house on the 40W600 block of Willowbrook Drive.

Paramedics took her to Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital, where she died.

Coroner Rob Russell said Summerwill died of cranial injuries and had no other injuries.

"She died from blunt-force injuries, definitely consistent with a baseball bat," Russell said, adding she was struck "multiple" times.

Toxicology results from Summerwill are pending, Russell said.

Police have said they have not previously responded or been called to any domestic disturbance calls at the house.

Neighbors said Summerwill lived at the house with her husband and the couple had two college-aged children.
