Whipple, Jandes lead in Fremont 79; Macoch has slim margin

Two Fremont Elementary School District 79 trustees headed to victory in a six-way race Tuesday night, and a third incumbent had a razor-thin lead to stay on the board.

Unofficial results showed incumbents Gabriela Whipple, Agnieszka "Aga" Macoch and Michael Jandes leading challengers Ryan Wollberg, Ronald J. Swartz and Dave Whitson. But Swartz was only 3 votes away from nudging Macoch out of the third of three seats on the ballot.

Whipple led all vote-getters with 697 votes. Jandes had 630 votes. And Macoch had 556 votes. Swartz was nipping at Machoch's heels with 553 votes. Wollberg trailed in the contest with 470 votes. And Whitson accumulated 296 votes in early returns.

Provisional ballots and late-arriving mail-in ballots are not included.

The contest was low key, with candidates sticking to the issues in interviews rather than slinging mud at each other or complaining about district policy. Campaigning on social media was minimal.

Student safety and ensuring the district's continued financial health were among the candidates' top concerns.

Consisting of three schools, District 79 is based in unincorporated Lake County near Mundelein. It serves more than 2,200 students from Mundelein, Wauconda, Hawthorn Woods, Grayslake, Round Lake, Long Grove, Libertyville and unincorporated areas.
