Baseball: Keller's 12 Ks lead Wauconda past Warren
Marcus Keller pitched 5⅔ innings of shutout baseball, striking out 12, and Wauconda shut out Warren 3-0 in the Southern Illinois Miners Classic at Rent One Park in downstate Marion Monday.
Keller, who's committed to the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, allowed just 3 hits.
Bobby Efflandt finished up to earn the save. Cam Janik (triple), Jacob Jensen and Drew Coe had 2 hits apiece for the Bulldogs (1-2).
Casey Cobe was 2-for-4 for Warren, and Mikey Kocen had a double.
Grayslake North 4, Dublin Jerome (Ohio) 3: In Florida, winning pitcher Jason Donohue allowed 2 runs and 2 hits over 6 innings, striking out four and walking three.
Matt Rennolds, Matt Heery (2 RBI) and Grant Garrett each had 2 hits for the Knights.
Libertyville 10, Tri-City Christian 0: In Arizona, Randy Moss (2 innings), Justin Miller (2 innings) and Conner Lutes (1 inning) combined to a throw a five-inning shutout.
The Wildcats were led offensively by Tanner Kelly (2-for-2, 2 RBI), David Robertson (2-for-3, double), Sam Paden (double), Derek Calamari (1-for-3, 3 RBI) and Garrison Bennett (1-for-2, 3 RBI).
Yough (Pittsburgh) 7, Grayslake Central 5: In Florida, the Rams suffered their first loss of the season, committing 6 errors walking five batters.
GC opened the game by scoring 2 runs in its half of the first, as Nic Presutti (2-for-3) tripled to lead off the game and scored on a Coby Moe single. No. 2 hitter Marcus Maristella walked behind Presutti and scored on an Eric Sturm single.
Yough scored 4 runs in its half of the first and GC came back in the second, as Presutti and pinch hitter Andrew Gatchell had run-producing singles. The game stayed tied until the fourth when Yough scored 3 more runs to take a 7-4 lead. The Rams added a run in the sixth on a Daniel Rogers groundout.
Paul Kula added a pair of singles for Grayslake Central.
On Sunday afternoon on the Atlanta Braves Stadium field, GC rode a 4-hit day from senior Tony Crews in beating Montour out of the Pittsburgh area 16-4 in 6 innings. The Rams busted open an 8-4 game by scoring 8 runs in the sixth.
Crews had a day to remember with a double and 3 singles and also drove in 3 runs and scored 3 runs. Joey Webster added a pair of singles, while Moe, Gabe Lobeman and Kevin O'Brien each drove in a pair of runs.
The run support was more than enough for Rams starting and winning pitcher Sturm, who allowed 2 hits through 4 innings in picking up the win. Ethan Peterson tossed the final 2 innings allowing just 1 run to go along with 1 strikeout.
Grayslake Central returns to action on Tuesday against Orange.
Mundelein 8, Grant 4: At Rent One Park in downstate Marion, the Mustangs received 2 hits apiece from Jared Dorfman, Andrew Schroeder (double, 2 RBI), Drake Morton (2 RBI) and Mason Schultz (2 RBI).
Rahul Champeneri earned the won, allowing 4 runs in 5 innings, striking out six.
Grant (2-1) got 2 hits apiece from Henry Kusiak, Carlos Martinez (sacrifice fly, 2 RBI) and Joey Califf (double, walk, 2 runs). Daniel Laughery tripled and knocked in a run.
Dundee-Crown 11, Mundelein 0: In downstate Marion, the Mustangs had just 6 hits, by 6 players.
Waukegan 5, Round Lake 2: Angel Cuevas was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a stolen base, as the Panthers fell to 0-2.
Gio Cirelli allowed 1 earned run and 2 hits in 4 innings, striking out four and walking two. Oswaldo Mercado yielded just 1 hit and 0 runs in 3 innings, striking out five and walking one.
O'Fallon 4, Stevenson 3: Jake Surane and Chris Farina were both 2-for-3 in the Patriots' loss.
Stevenson led 3-1 after scoring 3 runs in the top of the fifth, but O'Fallon answered with 3 in the bottom of the inning.
Stevenson 4, O'Fallon 0: The Patriots salvaged a split on the day. Ethan Kallish (3 innings), Jacob Freed (1 inning), Michael D'Angelo (1 inning), Brandon Ward (1 inning) and Brandon Frankel (1 inning) combined on the shutout.
Ward was 2-for-4 at the plate and stole 3 bases.
Sacred Heart-Griffin 10, Lakes 0: Hunter Pudlo tripled for one of the Eagles' 3 hits in their six-inning loss.
