Tuesday's Lake County roundup
Luke Behrens delivered a 2-run single in the top of the eighth inning, and Warren's baseball team rallied to beat host Lane Tech 3-2 in its season opener at Kerry Wood Field in Chicago on Tuesday.
Bradley Vondruska pitched 4 innings in relief to earn the win. Nate Rentas had an RBI double for the Blue Devils, who tied the score with a pair of runs in the seventh to force extra innings.
Both Warren rallies came with two out.
Vernon Hills 6, Grayslake North 6 (susp.): The seesaw opener was suspended in the seventh inning due to darkness.
Vernon Hills put a 6-spot up in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Caleb Thomson walked to start it. Danny Wizceb then singled, followed by back-to-back walks by Jack Morris and Jack Barsczc. After a fly out by Logan Coty, Wizceb scored on Quinn Geren's forceout. With two out, Brendan Holloway doubled to clear the bases. Ethan Bowers then doubled and scored on an error.
Grayslake North battled back, scoring 1 run in the sixth and five more in the seventh. The Knights had the bases loaded with one out when the game was called.
Softball
Stevenson 10, Carmel 6: Maggie Trotter belted a grand slam and drove in 6 runs, as the Patriots won the nonconference game.
Trotter finished 3-for-4, and Stevenson got multihit games as well from Anna Fossier (2-for-3), Hailey Barnes (2-for-3, double, 3 RBI), Reagan Koenigs (2-for-4) and Emily Freedman (2-for-4).
Girls soccer
Stevenson 3, Wauconda 0: Kalyssa VanZanten had a goal and 2 assists, as the Patriots won the nonconference match.
VanZanten scored off an assist from Abby Kalou in the first half, then set up goals by Gracie Wingfield and Jess Baiggoria in the second half. Jenny Staten (7 saves) and Arushi Nair (3 saves) shared the shutout.
"The girls played well tonight and we executed within multiple lines of play," Stevenson coach PepeJon Chavez said. "Our buildup has improved since early games, and we are starting to iron out some new ideas and concepts. Wauconda was an excellent team and played great. The score does not reflect how well they played. I believe coach Beau (Shogren) has a good plan and will take his girls far. We had a solid team effort and great results from our strikers Kalyssa VanZanten and Gracie Wingfield with Abby Kalou in the mix and Gabi Nyc managing the middle. Jenny Staten with another shutout and Kayla Constabileo managed the back line. It's a very long season and we have a lot of growth and pain ahead."
Wauconda freshman keeper Mackenzie Arden made 10 saves.
"We don't want to make any excuses about this one," Shogren said. "Stevenson outplayed us and finished their chances when they had them. There were periods in the match where we really put a lot of pressure on them. We picked up the intensity in the second half and put balls through the box several times. We had some good looks at goal, but something was missing today. We are going to learn a lot from this game, and we'll come back better against Warren on Thursday."
Lake Zurich 3, Jacobs 1: Morgan Long scored twice off assists from Cassidy Johnston, and the host Bears earned their first win of the season.
Ashleigh Stanovich also scored for Lake Zurich (1-1-1), assisted by Tess Vages. Bears keeper Paige Grossenbacher made 5 saves.
