10-year-old boy killed when van flips into retention pond

HUNTLEY, Ill. (AP) - Authorities say a 10-year-old boy was killed when the minivan he was riding in ran off a northern Illinois interstate and flipped upside down into a retention pond.

The McHenry County coroner on Monday identified the boy as Cameron V. Simmons of Addison. An autopsy is planned Tuesday. Authorities say the minivan was traveling on Interstate 90 in Huntley when the accident happened about 6:47 p.m. Sunday.

Illinois State Police say the boy was unresponsive when he was removed from the van. A doctor on scene administered CPR to the boy, who was pronounced dead at about 8:30 p.m. at a hospital.

Authorities say two witnesses helped the boy's mother, who was driving, and his sister out of the van. They suffered minor injuries.

State police are investigating.
