Winfield house uninhabitable after fire

Authorities are trying to determine the cause of a Thursday morning house fire in Winfield that displaced a family.

Winfield Fire Protection District firefighters were dispatched at 3:44 a.m. to a house on the 26W200 block of Jewell Road. When they arrived minutes later, they found "a large volume of fire" coming from the rear of the split-level structure.

Deputy Fire Chief Steve Evans said the residents who were inside the house escaped before firefighters arrived. No injuries were reported.

Evans said the bulk of the fire was out within 30 minutes, but firefighters remained on the scene until about 6:45 a.m.

Damage is estimated at roughly $300,000, officials said.

The house has been deemed uninhabitable until repairs are made.

It's not yet known exactly where or how the fire started. Evans said the investigation is ongoing.

Firefighters from Wheaton, Carol Stream and West Chicago assisted Winfield.
