Thief sentenced to 21 years for East Dundee, Hampshire gas station robberies

A 20-year-old Chicago man was sentenced to 21 years prison for his role in holding up two Thornton's gas stations in Hampshire and East Dundee in spring 2017.

Damarcus D. Gilmore, of the 8200 block of South Ridgeland, pleaded guilty Friday to two counts of armed robbery with a firearm in connection with a May 14, 2017, armed robbery in Hampshire and a May 15, 2017, armed robbery in East Dundee.

The armed robbery with a firearm charge was punishable by six to 30 years in prison. Gilmore was sentenced to six years, plus 15 years under state law because a firearm was used in the crime, according to prosecutors.

Gilmore was sentenced to 21 years for each robbery. The sentences are to be served concurrently.

According to East Dundee police, three people walked into a Speedway gas station, followed by a fourth person who pulled a gun.

They stole money, scratch-off tickets and the store clerk's cellphone, while a fifth person acted as the getaway driver.

Gilmore also was charged with robbing the Hampshire gas station of nearly $600, along with cigarettes, scratch-off tickets and nearly $30 of Swisher Sweets, according to court records.

An Illinois State Trooper pulled over a 2007 Chevy Impala with five people in it about 2:30 a.m. May 15, near the River Road oasis on Interstate 90. The trooper noticed scratch-off tickets and a coin machine that dispenses change as part of a cash register in the car and in plain view. A 9 mm semi-automatic handgun also was found, police said.

Under state law, Gilmore must serve 100 percent of the 15-year add-on for armed robbery. The six-year part of his sentence can be cut in half for good behavior, and he gets credit for more than 21 months served at the Kane County jail.

Gilmore also pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of misdemeanor battery in a February 2018 jail incident in which he was accused of severely beating Kennrith Foster, a 49-year-old Indiana man charged with attempted murder in Sugar Grove, records show. Gilmore was sentenced to 180 days in jail and received credit for time served.

Four others were charged, including two 17-year-old juveniles, in the gas station robberies. Santrell Tamir, 20, of Chicago pleaded guilty last year to felony attempted armed robbery and was sentenced to probation and six months in jail.

Brian D. Ormond, 20, also of Chicago, is set for a jury trial April 15. He is next due in court Thursday and is being held at the Kane County jail on $200,000 bail.
