Sound check: Andrew Salgado brings a little bit of Nashville back home

Andrew Salgado returns

Darien native Andrew Salgado has been recording and slinging his fresh spin on country down in Nashville for a few years now, but he still likes to return home to play for fans in the Chicago area. Catch him as he performs a mix of traditional country favorites along with originals, including some tunes from last year's release, “'86 Vol 1.” 10:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, at Bub City, 435 N. Clark St., Chicago. (312) 610-4200 or bub-city.com.

Braxton's R&B

Toni Braxton's “Un-break My Heart” and “Breathe Again” were, ahem, heart-rending additions to the soundtrack of the mid-'90s, but they are far from the only things the sultry-voiced R&B star is known for. Along with a number of TV and film appearances, Braxton has recorded eight studio albums and has been touring fairly consistently, especially in the last decade. She brings her “As Long As I Live Tour” to Chicago's Arie Crown Theater with special guests SWV. 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, at Arie Crown Theater, 2301 S. Lake Shore Drive, Chicago. Tickets start at $64. (312) 791-6900 or ariecrown.com.

'90s nostalgia

Everclear took over the airwaves in the mid-'90s when “Santa Monica” introduced the Portland band's “Sparkle and Fade” album to an alternative-loving nation, bringing some attention to the previously released “Heroin Girl” and setting the stage for the follow-up album, “So Much for the Afterglow.” Fastball followed not far behind with the breakout single, “The Way,” the first of several hits off the band's platinum-selling “All the Pain Money Can Buy,” and positioning both bands to tour together in the late '90s. Relive those days of alternative rock when they tour to Waukegan's Genesee Theatre. 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at Genesee Theatre, 203 N. Genesee St., Waukegan. $40-$70. (847) 263-6300 or geneseetheatre.com.
