Hanover Park man charged with cutting Verizon cable

A Hanover Park man who authorities say cut a fiber optic cable from a light pole on the grounds of a Verizon office in Schaumburg was charged with criminal damage to property.

Timothy Carson, 54, was ordered held on a $20,000 I-bond Wednesday, meaning he will be released from custody without posting a cash bond.

Video surveillance shows Carson cutting the wire from a light pole at the Verizon office site on March 6, 2018, placing it in his van and driving off, said Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Ryan DeGroot.

If convicted, he could face up to five years in prison for the class 3 felony. Probation is also an option.

The cost to replace the wire, including labor, totaled $20,506.63, DeGroot said.

A spokeswoman for Verizon said the company can't comment on legal proceedings. However, "there was no customer impact," Carolyn A. Schamberger said in a statement.

According to prosecutors, Carson is on misdemeanor probation for pushing an air conditioning unit off the top of a vacant Hoffman Estates building.

Carson next appears in court on Jan. 10.
