Illinois state trooper guilty of soliciting prostitute

URBANA, Ill. (AP) - An Illinois State trooper who admitted to soliciting a woman to have sex with him has been sentenced to a form of probation and agreed to resign from his job.

The News-Gazette in Champaign reports Leonard Kirkpatrick of Charleston pleaded guilty Wednesday to misdemeanor solicitation of a sex act.

In return for his plea agreement, worked out by State's Attorney Julia Rietz and attorney Mike Zopf, more serious charges of official misconduct were dismissed. Kirkpatrick also agreed he'd resign from his position within 30 days and pay a $500 fine.

Prosecutors alleged Kirkpatrick made the solicitations April 1 to "Megan" on the now deactivated online web site Backpage.com.

Rietz said the contacts with "Megan" were allegedly made by Kirkpatrick via text message. Rietz added no sex acts ever actually occurred.
