Democrat Britton defeats GOP incumbent Goslin in Cook board race

Democrat challenger Scott Britton bested longtime Republican incumbent Gregg Goslin in the Cook County Board District 14 race.

Britton received nearly 54 percent of the vote to Goslin's 46 percent, according to unofficial returns. With 195 of 205 precincts reporting, Britton had 56,792 votes to Goslin's 48,743 votes.

Goslin, a 20-year veteran of the board, had been targeted by Cook County Democrats who pumped more than a quarter-million dollars into Britton's campaign since June. Despite that level of financial support, Britton vowed to remain autonomous and be an independent vote.

Before the election, Goslin, of Glenview, said this would be his last term. He campaigned mostly on his experience and being a fiscal hawk who held Democrats on the board accountable for spending.

Britton, a lawyer and former municipal trustee and school board member from Glenview, focused his campaign on social initiatives for the county.
