Boy Scouts, anglers help save brothers after kayaks capsize

PERU, Ind. (AP) - Members of a Boy Scout troop are winning praise for helping save two brothers whose kayaks capsized on northern Indiana's Mississinewa (mis-ih-SIHN'-uh-wah) Lake.

The Miami County Sheriff's Office says the scouts and two fishermen who found the brothers "undoubtedly saved the lives of the two kayakers."

Police say Tim and Jimmy Ratliff may have been in the chilly lake for an hour Saturday before Boy Scouts who'd been hiking around the lake heard their cries for help.

The scouts from Troop 69 in Zionsville, just northwest of Indianapolis, spotted the brothers in the water and two of them ran to a boat ramp to summon help, while a third called 911.

The Kokomo Tribune reports that two men returning from a fishing trip ultimately pulled the brothers into their boat.
