Anna Wermuth Named to List of Most Notable Women Lawyers in Chicago

Anna Wermuth, Co-Chair of Cozen O'Connor's Higher Education Industry Practice Group, and Vice-Chair of the law firm's Labor & Employment Department, has been honored for the second year in a row by Crain's Chicago Business.

In 2017, she was named to the inaugural list of Chicago's "Most Influential Women Lawyers," one of only 60 attorneys honored. This year, Crain's has expanded the list to over 150 attorneys, renaming the accolade the "Most Notable Women Lawyers" in Chicago.

On both lists, Crain's recognized Wermuth for her professionalism and for her civic and charitable contributions.

The growth of Wermuth's education practice was detailed in a 2017 feature in the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin entitled "Who Universities Bring to the Bargaining Table". She continues to be recognized as a "go to" resource for both private and public institutions facing union activity from faculty and students.

"Anna has a deep understanding of the issues faced by universities and their special needs, and is well-attuned to the culture of these institutions, which is uniquely different than that of corporate America," says Joe Tilson, Co-Chair of Cozen O'Connor's Labor & Employment Department. Her clients include many of the most prestigious schools in Chicago including the University of Chicago, Northwestern University, Roosevelt University and DePaul University.

In addition, Wermuth counsels several Fortune 500 employers on maintaining compliance with state and federal laws and regulations, assists them with developing employment policies and executing human resources strategies, negotiates employment and separation agreements, advises employers in connection with reductions in force, and has conducted numerous internal investigations.

She has been invited to speak to other attorneys and human resource professionals on wide-ranging issues in employment law, including the ABA Labor & Employment Law Section, the National Association of College and University Attorneys, the National Association of College and University Business Officers, the Society of Human Resource Management, the Practising Law Institute, the North Shore Labor Council, and the Chicago Bar Association.

Wermuth has also held several leadership positions within the ABA Labor & Employment Section, including serving as the Management Co-Chair of the Development of the Law Under the NLRA Committee. She is the Editor in Chief of the Developing Labor Law, the leading traditional labor law treatise jointly published by Bloomberg/BNA and the ABA. She is also the past chair of the Labor & Employment Law Committee of the CBA.

Wermuth's recent accolades include being named one of 2018's "Top 20 Labor & Employment Attorneys in the Nation" by LawDragon, an honor she also received in 2017. She has also been recognized by Chambers & Partners - with highlighted client comments such as "…one of the best lawyers I've worked with" and "…she's amazing at turning around things quickly, sensitive to understanding a client environment and a great writer."

Wermuth was also named a 2018 "Best Lawyer" by Best Lawyers of America. And in 2017, she was named as a "Woman Making an Impact in the Law" by the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin. She has also been recognized by her peers as an Illinois "SuperLawyer" and as an Illinois "Leading Lawyer."

In addition to her legal practice, Anna serves on the Board of Directors of the Chicago Youth Centers, a 60-year-old non-profit organization that services over 4,000 children and families in Chicago each year with early childhood education, out-of-school, and teen leadership programs.
