Sheriff's lieutenant killed in northern Illinois crash

BYRON, Ill. (AP) - Police say a northern Illinois sheriff's lieutenant was killed when he crossed into oncoming traffic and crashed head-on into an SUV.

State police say 50-year-old Ogle County sheriff's Lt. Randall Hilliard was driving a pickup truck when the crash happened early Saturday on Illinois 72 near Byron. Hilliard died at the scene, while four people in the SUV were taken to a hospital with injuries.

The sheriff's department says Hilliard was off duty at the time of the crash. He had been a member of the department since he was hired in 1991 as a jail officer.

State police were investigating the circumstances of the crash that happened about 10 miles southwest of Rockford.
