Lake County felony court to close July 23 for move to new courthouse tower

Moving day is approaching for court officials at the Lake County courthouse.

Felony criminal courts will essentially be shut down July 23 to move courtrooms and judges to the new court tower at 301 Washington St., said Danny Davis, executive director of the 19th Judicial Circuit.

Davis said felony court will reopen in the eight-story tower July 30. Jury assembly, some administrative offices, and bond court will move to the tower, across the street from the old courthouse.

Bond and arraignment courts will remain open on a limited basis between July 23 and 30 in case the courtrooms are needed, Davis said. Family, misdemeanor criminal and civil courts remain in the old building and will not be shut down July 23.

"I think there will be some confusion when we first open the new tower," Davis said. "We will have staff to guide people in the right direction."

The county board approved building a 200,000-square-foot tower in 2012. It houses 12 new courtrooms, jury assembly space, various administrative services and room for six future courtrooms.

Officials host a ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday.
