Southern Indiana mini-park being dedicated to fallen soldier

COLUMBUS, Ind. (AP) - A new mini-park area in a southern Indiana community is being dedicated to the memory of a soldier who died following an attack in Afghanistan in 2017.

The Republic reports a ceremony to memorialize the life of 23-year-old Sgt. Jonathon M. Hunter at the newly completed green space in Columbus is scheduled for Saturday. He joined the Army in 2014 and was killed during a suicide bombing attack on a NATO convoy near Kandahar.

His father Mark Hunter says several family members are expected to attend.

The site is one of two recently completed mini-park areas. The green space features a pedestrian-friendly walkway and engraved bricks. They include an inscription from the Columbus soldier's widow. The brick engraving from Whitney Hunter reads: "RIP, my love."
