Badminton: Stevenson repeats as state champ

Stevenson's badminton team produced a dominant Day 2 showing to wrap up a repeat state championship under coach Grant Johnson.

The Patriots had both the doubles and singles winners to amass 25.5 points. Naperville North (18.5) finished second and Fremd (18) was third.

In singles, Stevenson's Esther Shi defeated Naperville North's Bhaavya Manikonda 21-14, 21-10 for the title.

In the third-place singles matchup, Stevenson's Shibani Ram topped Rachel Ye of Fremd 21-14, 21-18, and Fremd's Kellie Liu beat Naperville North's Emma Lin 21-9, 21-7 for the consolation title.

The doubles final was an all-Stevenson affair, as Emily Hu and Jenny Yang bettered Jyotsna Harikrishna and Benna Li 21-7, 21-19.

Naperville North's Clara Duan and Taylor Zhou got past Fremd's Hannah Chen and Jenny Li 21-15, 21-12 in the third-place matchup.

The championship is the third in Stevenson's history. In addition to last year's triumph, the Patriots won in 2012 under coach Mike Fitzgerald.

Stevenson's point total from this year has only been equalled once in state history, by New Trier's winning team in 2010.

Neuqua Valley placed fourth with 7.5 points, and Hinsdale Central and Palatine were part of a four-way tie for fifth with 6.5 points. Glenbrook South and Prospect tied for ninth with 6 points.
