Softball: Mack fans 15 in Grayslake North's win
Emily Mack made a statement in the cold, striking out 15 batters in a complete-game effort, as Grayslake North opened its softball season with a 7-4 win over visiting Waukegan in a nonconference game on Wednesday.
Mack, a junior and first-year varsity player, did not allow an earned run, while yielding 5 hits and 2 walks. Freshman Meghan Delahunty had a day offensively for the Knights, going 2-for-2 with 2 walks, 2 runs scored and 2 stolen bases. Grace Brown and Maddy Wais added doubles.
Nicole Guzman pitched well for Wauconda, scattering 6 hits to go along with 4 strikeouts and 3 earned runs. Enedy Perez had a double for the Bulldogs.
Carmel 12, Stevenson 0: Darcey Petrus fired a 1-hitter over 5 innings, and Isabella Anichini homered for the Corsairs in the nonconference game.
Lake Zurich 17, Deerfield 4: At Barrington, Elizabeth Chialdikas went 5-for-5 with 2 doubles, a triple, 4 runs scored and 5 RBI for the Bears.
Winning pitcher Stephanie Keefe was 3-for-5 with a double and 4 RBI. She also pitched all 7 innings, allowing only 2 earned runs while striking out seven, walking three and allowing 6 hits.
Lake Zurich's 18-hit attack also included big games from Megan Croke (2-for-5, 3 runs, double), Julia Zaucha (2-for-4, 4 runs, double, RBI) and Abby Jokerst (2-for-5, double, 2 RBI).
Woodstock North 7, Lakes 6: Ellie Thurow struck out 17 batters, as the Thunder won in nonconference action.
