EIU credits marketing campaign for enrollment interest

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Eastern Illinois University's president says the campus appears to be headed toward a significant increase in freshman enrollment next fall.

The (Champaign) News-Gazette reports that EIU President David Glassman told the Illinois House Higher Education Appropriations Committee on Thursday that a marketing campaign touting the school looks to be paying off. He says predictions are that the school will see increases in first-time freshmen, transfer students and graduate students.

Glassman said that as of Thursday the university had received more than 7,900 applications, compared with about 6,200 a year ago. EIU has admitted nearly 4,400 new students as of Thursday. That's up from about 3,150 a year ago.

Glassman credits the increases to a marketing campaign that has included ads on TV, in movie theaters and on billboards.
