Mundelein students learn Latino culture and dance

About 30 students learned Latin dance with help from their Hispanic classmates Tuesday during a free workshop in preparation for the El Baile school dance at Mundelein High School.

The Puertas Latin Culture Club and the Student Leadership Organization sponsor both the workshop and the upcoming dance that will feature various styles of Latin music, including Cumbia, Banda, Merengue, Bachata and others.

Students learned and practiced basic steps so they can feel more confident when participating in the first Latin dance night held at the school, scheduled for March 17.

"We want to bridge the gap between our Latino and non-Latino students, and this dance is kind of a way to do that," said co-sponsor Carsyn Rodriguez. "I hope this is a way to start celebrating our Latino culture and hopefully creating awareness for students who are not native to Latino culture."
