UMaine's Vachon becomes permanent women's basketball coach

ORONO, Maine (AP) - The University of Maine women's basketball coach who stepped in on an interim basis last year has inked a four-year contract.

Amy Vachon was elevated from assistant coach when Richard Barron went on medical leave in January 2017. This season, her team led the America East conference with a 13-3 regular season record.

The former all-conference guard and two-year captain at UMaine will earn $120,000 per year.

The nature of Barron's medical problem was never revealed. He was named a special assistant to Athletic Director Karlton Creech on Dec. 1, and will remain in that capacity until June 30.
