Flooding from heavy rain, melting snow hits northern Indiana

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - Flooding caused by heavy rainfall and melting snow has closed numerous roads across northern Indiana.

The National Weather Service issued flood warnings or advisories for Tuesday covering the northern third of Indiana, along with nearby areas of Michigan and Illinois. The weather service says up to 5 inches of rain has fallen in some places by Tuesday afternoon.

Officials closed many city and county roads from Hammond in Lake County to the South Bend and Elkhart areas. Flooding also blocked parts of U.S. 20 near Michigan City and U.S. 231 in Crown Point. Several vehicles became stuck in high water, but no serious injuries were immediately reported.

Elkhart County's emergency agency used boats to help people from a dozen homes along Baugo Creek, but some residents didn't want to leave.
