Sikh driver's complaint referred to state prosecutors

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. (AP) - Members of the Sikh community in northwest Illinois are expressing impatience with an investigation into an attack on a ride-share driver.

The Sikh Coalition, a civil rights organization, said Friday an arrest should have been made since the Jan. 28 attack on Gunjeet Singh.

Singh is the religious leader at the Sikh Religious Society Temple in Silvis. While working as a driver for Uber he was allegedly accosted by a man who put a gun to his head while saying "I hate turban people" and "I hate beards."

Rock Island County State's Attorney John McGehee said Friday he has referred the case to the Illinois State's Attorney Appellate Prosecutor's office. McGehee cited a conflict-of-interest, which he didn't explain.

Sikh Coalition spokeswoman Amrith Kaur calls the incident a hate crime.
