BYU hires AJ Steward to coach running backs, finalizes staff

PROVO, Utah (AP) - BYU has hired AJ Steward as running backs coach.

The Cougars finalized their coaching staff Tuesday by adding Steward, who held the same position at Rice the last four seasons. New offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes now has Fesi Sitake as wide receivers coach, Ryan Pugh as offensive line coach and Aaron Roderick as passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

Steve Clark returns to coach tight ends after offensive coordinator Ty Detmer was fired and every other offensive staff member was replaced.

With Steward guiding the running backs, Rice averaged 187 rushing yards per game in 2017, the second-highest total in Conference USA. The 28 year-old former Kansas tight end spent his first two years coaching as a graduate assistant at Rice before being promoted in 2014.
