1 dead, 2 hurt in western Indiana apartment building fire

BRAZIL, Ind. (AP) - Authorities say one person has died and two others are injured in an apartment building fire in western Indiana.

Brazil Fire Chief Jake Bennett says firefighters were called to the six-story Meridian Towers owned by the Brazil Housing Authority on Tuesday afternoon.

Clay County Coroner Nick French confirmed one fatality, and Bennett says two other people were injured. Bennett says the building housed 65 people.

The fire appears to have started in a fourth-floor apartment. Bennett says only that unit suffered fire damage, but much of the building suffered water damage.

Bennett says the cause of the fire was under investigation by the state fire marshal.

Displaced residents were taken to a community center.

Brazil is about 55 miles (88 kilometers) southwest of Indianapolis.
