Alabama hires Jeff Banks as Tide special teams coordinator

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - Alabama has hired Jeff Banks as its special teams coordinator.

Banks, whose hiring was announced Thursday, spent the past five seasons as tight ends coach and special teams coordinator for Kevin Sumlin at Texas A&M. The Aggies ranked third nationally in net punting and second in punt return average last season.

Before coming to Texas A&M in 2013, Banks spent one season as Virginia's running backs coach and special teams coordinator and nine years in the same roles at UTEP.

He has also worked as an assistant at Idaho State and was a graduate assistant at Washington State from 1998-2000.

Banks was a two-time all-conference punter at Washington State.
