Woman dies 2ˆ½ weeks after car sinks in Indianapolis pond

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Authorities say a woman has died 2ˆ½ weeks after divers rescued her from a car that crashed through ice on an Indianapolis pond and sank into its freezing waters.

The Indianapolis Fire Department says 49-year-old Carol D. Perkins died Tuesday night at an Indianapolis hospital. She had been in critical condition since the incident occurred on Dec. 31.

Battalion Chief Rita Reith (ryt) says that before Perkins died, organs were harvested from her body for donation to others.

Authorities have said that after Perkins' car drove 150 yards onto an apartment complex's retention pond, it broke through the ice and sank in 12 feet of water. Divers pulled the woman from her car after smashing out its sunroof.
