Fisherkeller takes libero skills to College of Lake County

Grant senior Katy Fisherkeller has signed with the College of Lake County to play volleyball this fall for Lancers coaches Janet and Bill Szczesniak.

Fisherkeller played libero for Grant the last two years and has been on the Bulldogs varsity for three seasons.

She was the Bulldogs' Most Valuable Defensive Player as a junior and senior.

Fisherkeller was selected to the All Northern Lake County conference team and was an all-area selection as a senior. A four-time scholar athlete, she finished third in serving aces for Lake County her junior year.

She has played for Stateline Volleyball Club the last six years as a libero.

Men's basketball

Loras junior Will McClaughry (Lake Zurich) scored his team's first 11 points and finished with 15 points in an 82 -80 Win over Conference leader Buena Vista.

The Duhawks improved to 12-4 and earlier this season made they made ESPN's 'Top Ten Plays of the Day' when they defeated Macalester 165-89 margin as they scored 100 points in the first half.

In that game, the Duhawks set season records in the following categories: points (165), field goals made (58), field goal attempts (91), free throws made (28), free throw attempts (34), rebounds (62), assists (48), field goal percentage (63.7), 3 point field goals made (21), 3-point field goal percentage (52.5) and defensive rebounds (48)

Loras' 165 points are the most scored by any NCAA team this season.

• Grayslake North guard James Connolly made a verbal commitment to Saint Mary University (Minn.).

Wrestling

Illinois junior Emery Parker (Warren) was named wrestler of the week in the Big Ten after going 2-0 against a pair of ranked opponents.

The 184-pounder helped lead the Illini to conference victories over No. 20 Nebraska and Northwestern.

He defeated No. 6 Taylor Venz of Nebraska in come-from-behind fashion with an 8-0 surge in the final minute behind 6 back points and No. 18 Mitch Sliga of Northwestern by an 8-3 decision.

Men's track

Augustana senior Kevin Barbian (Libertyville) placed third (47-3¾) in the shot put at the Frigid Bee Opener at the Roell Indoor Track on the campus of St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa.

• Augustana junior Rob Williams (Vernon Hills) placed fifth (4:38.60) in the mile.

• Augustana senior Kyle Hucker (Wauconda) was part of the Vikings' winning 4x400 relay team the was clocked in 3: 24.31.

Cheerleading

The recipient of the National Coach of the Year Award for spirit is Jeffrey Siegal, the cheerleading coach at Buffalo Grove. Siegal is one of 23 high school coaches from across the country who have been selected as 2017 National Coaches of the Year by the National Federation of State High School Associations Coaches Association.

Seminole Sports

The inaugural Seminole Sports Coach's Pow Wow will be held in the Chandler's Chop House Grille at the Schaumburg Golf Club on Thursday, Jan 25.

The event will feature a sit-down buffet and some lively baseball banter.

Keynote speaker will be Northwestern University baseball coach Spencer Allen, who will give some tips on how to better prepare teams for games and practices. A question-and-answer session will follow. Fee is $20.

Seminole Sports is run by former Conant all-area baseball player John Suvada.

Bowling

McKendree senior Sarah Wille (Hoffman Estates) will compete for Team USA. She earned her spot on the roster thanks to a strong performance at The Orleans Bowling Center.

Wille finished in the top 30 in each of the five qualifying rounds in Las Vegas.

After beginning the week in 15th place, she steadily moved up the field and made her move on day four with an 11th-place showing.

Wille entered the top ten of the overall standings after the fourth round and finished the week in seventh place overall with 106 points.

It is the first Team USA selection for Wille, who was an honorable mention All-America honors for the Bearcats in 2017.
