South Bend business owner enters congressional race

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - A South Bend business owner is seeking the Democratic nomination to challenge Republican Rep. Jackie Walorski for a northern Indiana congressional seat.

Yatish Joshi (JOH'-shee) announced his candidacy Thursday, saying strangers welcomed him when he immigrated to the United States from India 40 years ago and later became a citizen. He says President Donald Trump doesn't know what he's doing and just works off the cuff.

Joshi owns GTA Containers, which makes large-scale water containers. He started a foundation in his daughter's name after she and four other Indiana University music students died in a 2006 plane crash. The foundation gave $1.2 million toward renovation of IU-South Bend's recital hall.

Former Gov. Joe Kernan tells the South Bend Tribune that Joshi is "one of a kind" and he's endorsing him.
